‘Jordan: West Asia’s Historical Junction‘ by Dr Christopher A. Tuttle

Modern Jordan encompasses territories that have served as crossroads throughout human history. From humanity’s earliest exodus out of Africa through to the rise of modern nation states, Jordan’s eternal landscapes have witnessed many, pivotal moments in our global history. Come take a stroll with us along a few of Jordan’s paths and learn about some of the key historical locations and events that helped pave the way for the world in which live today.

Dr Christopher A. Tuttle is an archaeologist studying the Hellenistic and Roman periods in the Eastern Mediterranean. Former Associate Director at ACOR in Jordan and former Executive Director of the Council of American Overseas Research Centers. He holds a BA in Classical and Medieval Studies from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and a PhD from the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World at Brown University. He recently joined ASA as Academic and Outreach Coordinator.

Ramesses II (c1279 – 1213 BC) is known to many as ‘Ramesses the Great’. He built extraordinary temples throughout Egypt (notably Abu Simbel and the Ramesseum), adorning them with colossal statues of himself and images of his wives, including the renowned Queen Nefertari whose tomb in the Valley of the Queens is arguably the most beautiful in Egypt. Egyptologist Lucia Gahlin will explore the art and architecture of this impressive reign, and the achievements of this bold ruler in a golden age of Egyptian history.

Lucia Gahlin

Egyptologist and Honorary Research Associate at University College London’s Institute of Archaeology. Lucia has worked at Tell el-Amarna, Egypt, and at the Petrie Museum of Egyptian Archaeology, London. She has taught at several UK universities, and led tours to Egypt for over 25 years
