Part I: The Nuragic Culture of Sardinia
Dotted across Sardinia’s landscape are more than 7,000 megalithic stone towers called ’nuraghe.’ Who were the prehistoric people that built these many intriguing monuments and complexes? When and how were they built? What purposes might they have served? Join us to learn more about one of the most intriguing ancient peoples of the Mediterranean Sea.
Part II: Corsica – ‘The Most Beautiful One’
In 565 BCE Greeks from Phocaea in Asia Minor built their first colony on the shores of Corsica. This event introduced Corsica into Western recorded history. In this presentation we’ll explore some of the highlights from Corsica’s long history—from the mysterious prehistoric Torreans to the rise of the Corsican Republic in the 18th century. Join us for this interesting survey to learn more about one of the Mediterranean’s most fascinating islands.
Dr Christopher A. Tuttle is an archaeologist studying the Hellenistic and Roman periods in the Eastern Mediterranean. Former Associate Director at ACOR in Jordan and former Executive Director of the Council of American Overseas Research Centers. He holds a BA in Classical and Medieval Studies from the University of Massachusetts, Boston, and a PhD from the Joukowsky Institute for Archaeology and the Ancient World at Brown University. He recently joined ASA as Academic and Outreach Coordinator.
